Beach Pavilion

Miami Beach, Florida, USA

A shelter from the Sun on Miami Beach.

This temporary beach shelter is situated along Miami-Dade County’s longest park: the shoreline of MiamiBeach. The shelter is temporary because the harsh coastal marine environment makes permanent constructions often unfeasible given that a new structure eventually outweighs the ongoing high cost of maintaining any structure in a corrosive coastal environment.

When closed, this slightly elevated cubic volume is intended to produce an individul cinematic relationship between the human and the beach. There are two openings, one facing the ocean and the other the sky. Otherwise, the hinged rear wall can be propped open to create a sheltered space for multiple people.
